The
eyes of a bee
If you look on p8 of 'Would You Be a Bee?'
you will see that a bee has 5 eyes. Here are some
more facts about the eyes of a bee and some other
animals:
- Bees and other insects have 2 compound
eyes and 3 simple eyes. The compound eyes are
huge eyes on the side of a bee's head that are
made up of about 6900 hexagonal
lenses.
- Although the bee has 5 eyes, it can not see
very well. It can only see objects of about
1 metre away and it can't see the colour red
at all.
- The compound eyes are very good for sensing
movement.
- The simple eyes help the bee tell the difference
between light and dark.
- Other insects such as cockroaches,
butterflies and dragonflies also have compound
eyes. Their eyes are so big that these insects
can see all around them.
- Most spiders have eight eyes. These are simple
eyes at the top of the spider's head. These
allow the spider to see in all directions.
- The jumping spider has two eyes that are more
developed than the others. These help the spider
judge distances when jumping.
- A cat has poor coloured vision. Cats mainly
see the world in black, grey and white.
- Cats can see much better in the dark than
they can in the daylight.
- The animal with the biggest eyes in the world
is the giant squid - its eyes are as big as
a man's head!

animal do you think has the smallest eyes? Which
animal do you think has the most eyes? Can you
find an animal with no eyes?
